Reflections of Creation

One of the greatest things that God has given humans is the ability to see beauty in the world around us. I have never noticed my dog stop and stare at the beauty of a forest or the incredible colors of a sunset, but these things have the ability to stop me in my tracks in wonder and awe. This website is my attempt to capture some of the beauty and glory of an indescribable God by capturing reflections of Him that I see in His creation.

I forgot that my iso was set at 1600, and it was dark, so this picture is pretty grainy. I kinda like it that way though.

perspectives Friday, July 25, 2008 | 2

One of my favorite bands is the Christian rock band, Kutless. These guys have great music and amazing lyrics. Perspectives is a song on their second album (amazing album), and it begins with these lyrics:

It feels like your life's crashing down all around you
Let me ask if it's really so bad
Look at the world in it's suffering
Can you honestly tell me that
know one else could understand
All of the hurting inside?

Why can't you see that freedom
is sometimes just simply another perspective away
Who could you be if your lens was changed for a moment,
Would you still be the same?

This picture reminds me of Matthew 6:19-34. I hope that all of us will try to keep our focus and perspective on the things of God verses the stresses of the world.

what was around the bend Thursday, July 24, 2008 | 1

Here's what we saw at the end of the fjord.

around the bend Tuesday, July 22, 2008 | 1

On April 30th, Alison and I left Juneau on the cruise ship heading towards Sawyer Glacier. While the ship was heading up Tracey Arm Fjord, we were floored by how beautiful and colorful things were. At times, the walls were just these brown and black colors, and at times there were gorgeous trees covered in snow. I love the colors you see along the shoreline in this picture. The couple of hours it took going through this fjord ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.

The great thing was, we had no idea what was going to be beyond each curve in the fjord. It was quite a shock when we turned a corner, and there was the South Sawyer Glacier. Little did we know that people on the other side of the boat had been able to see the North Sawyer Glacier for a while.

Isn't that how God works though? All throughout life, He has these amazing experiences and incredible things He wants to do in your life. We just never know what's around the next bend. And what He shows you is probably different than what He will show me.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
-jeremiah 29:11

Here's something different for today. A while back, I played around with the picture I posted on April 27th.

7 days of night - last day Sunday, July 20, 2008 | 5

Here is a sculpture at our local library. Taken at f5.4 and f4 for 15 and 10 seconds respectively.

I also learned that even on a summer night in the desert, a bronze sculpture gets cold! So, take it from me -- don't hold your face on a bronze sculptures in the middle of the night. Your checks will thank you.

7 days of night - day six Saturday, July 19, 2008 | 2

This one was fun; f8 for 70 seconds.

7 days of night - day five Friday, July 18, 2008 | 1

top: f5.6 for 15 seconds
bottom: f4 for 20 seconds

I'm not sure which one of these I like better. The peaceful shot on top is a playground normally covered with screaming children, and it is usually far from peaceful. So, it's a nice change of pace to see it in a different light (ahahaha...i'm sooooo funny). But the twisty road in the bottom one intrigues me.

7 days of night - day four Thursday, July 17, 2008 | 1

f4 and f3.5 with exposure times of 30 seconds for the top picture, and 4 seconds for the bottom picture.

7 days of night - day three Wednesday, July 16, 2008 | 2

Both of these are 30 second shots at f3.5 and f4. Oh, and on this first shot, I'm on a bridge going across the river...if I can, I try and avoid swimming with the fancy camera. ;-)

7 days of night - day two Tuesday, July 15, 2008 | 0

Here's a couple for you today - a quick shot of the tripod reflection on a wall, and a light from a doorway at the courthouse (even with the light, this is a 30 second shot).

a Monday "painting with light" bonus Monday, July 14, 2008 | 4

Woohoo! You get two posts for a Monday, so you get more time to goof off at work today. I did end up taking some more photographs tonight, and since you guys love the painting with light concept, here's an extra pic for you guys. 'Nite!

7 days of night - day one Monday, July 14, 2008 | 0

Alright, here is day one of this week of nighttime photography. I have 9 pictures to show you over the next seven days, but that will probably change. A couple of those I am not real happy about, and I really would like to go out and spend more time on this project (I've only spent one hour in two locations around town at this point). I'm actually fighting the urge to go out and take pictures right now, but I don't think I will since it's 10:00 on Sunday night.

Okay, I'd say the pun in the title is intended, but I wouldn't want to admit to it.

For a couple of months I have wanted to do theme weeks where I would follow a theme in all of that week's postings (like all camera phone pictures, or everyday objects I use in work, etc). So starting Monday, I will have a week of one of my favorite types of photography-nighttime shots with exposure times between 15 and 45 seconds.

suprise! another alaska picture Friday, July 11, 2008 | 0

I really need to go out and take some more pictures so that I can post something other than Alaska pictures. While I do have many more Alaska pictures, I bet you guys would like to see something else from time to time. I actually have quite a few other pictures to post, just not on this computer.

a quick moment Wednesday, July 09, 2008 | 1

Here's something a little different for me. This was a very cloudy day, and so the fastest I was able to take this shot was at 1/800th of a second. While it didn't freeze the blades, I guess it got close.

I love sunsets Tuesday, July 01, 2008 | 2

There is just something special about a really great sunset. One of my favorite Bible verses is Psalm 19:1 which says, "The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship."

Reflections of Creation

the most important part of this website

I enjoy photography and I always find myself wanting more time to be outside with a camera. The idea of posting my pictures was born out of the love for my wife, Alison (, who hates it when I do not take my days off. This website, reflections of creation, is a way to force me to get out of the office from time to time and putting me outside where I love to be. While a creative outlet for me, I hope this is an encouraging site for you, and one which helps point you to the Creator of all this beauty around us. God is so much bigger and amazing than we could ever imagine, and He loves you and me! What an amazing thought! He loves us so much that He was even willing to let His son, Jesus, die as a sacrifice for us. That fact is more beautiful than any picture you will see on this website. I hope you know Jesus, but if you do not, please email me or go to Thanks again for coming and stop by again soon.
