As promised, here are some views of Mendenhall Glacier outside of Juneau, Alaska. Alison and I got to spend a couple of hours here while we were on our Alaska cruise, and this is something to see. All of these pictures are straight off of the camera with no altering or color enhancing. I don't have the saturation raised on the camera.
Pictures can't really capture how huge this giant chunk of ice is, so here is a picture with people along the shoreline so you can compare their size to the size of the front face of this giant hunk of ice. The blue you see in places is where parts of the glacier had recently broke off. That blue color is natural to glaciers. It has something to do with the refraction of light through the special crystalline structure you find only in glaciers. God is really creative!
I hope everyone gets a chance to see a glacier in person and see how amazing God has made these things. When you travel through a glacier carved valley, it is astounding to look up on either side of you and just see mountains climbing up. While traveling through Tracy Arm Fjord (not where this glacier is found), I was floored knowing that this deep valley was caused by ice grinding away any obstacles in it's path. It was really remarkable, and a BIG reminder to me of just how big GOD is.
