Today's post is the result of two things:
1) Alison is out of town.
2) I had a frustrating morning/afternoon/evening (but tonight with the teenagers was fun).
So, I decided to go out and play for a couple of hours tonight. This is the glow of Carlsbad taken from about 10 miles away. This is a four minute exposure and I like how it turned out. You can see more of the star trails by clicking on the picture to see a larger version, and I highly recommend looking at the larger version.
Matthew 5:14-15 (the message)
Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine!
that carlsbad glow

Pretty stunning! I'm glad you finally found a spot. The glow almost looks like a fire, which kind of goes along with the passage.
For a moment, I thought you captured the beginnings of an alien invasion.
Yeah, it does look kinda like that doesn't it. I'm disappointed because I was trying to head out somewhere away from the lights from Carlsbad/Artesia where I could point the camera due north. These star trails actually form a circle around the north star (you would see whole circles if you could do a day long exposure). I want to find a good place where I can shoot long 45 minute exposures where you get a good curve to them. Here's an example:
Click me-my favorite star trail picture taken at 16,000 feet while on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Someday I want to climb Kilimanjaro, and I want to see if I can duplicate this shot.
